How to read a 4WD water crossing before you commit
The Pentecost River crossing on the Gibb River Road looks like nothing from the bank. Wide, flat, a bit of current, maybe 400mm at the deepest visible point. I've sat there for twenty minutes watching other rigs go through before I moved, because the crossing that looks like nothing is exactly the one that catches people out. Water crossings kill more engines and drown more expensive electronics than rocky climbs ever do, and the failures are almost always avoidable.
I've been doing this solo for long enough now, top end and Kimberley mostly, that I've developed a routine I don't skip even when I'm running late for camp. It's not complicated. It's just consistent, which is the bit most people get wrong when they're tired, hot, and want the crossing behind them.
Why water crossings punish rushed decisions
A rock ledge doesn't change while you're looking at it. A river does. Rain a hundred kilometres upstream, a full tide pushing back up a tidal reach, another vehicle churning the bottom to soup thirty seconds before you arrive — the crossing you're about to drive into is not necessarily the crossing you just watched someone else do.
The damage list is long and boring: water through the air intake and into the engine (the one that actually writes rigs off), water into the diffs and gearbox through breathers that weren't extended, electrical gremlins from connectors that were never rated for submersion, and the simple embarrassment of a stall mid-crossing with the current pushing the rig sideways. None of that is dramatic until it's your rig, on your own, a long way from the nearest tow truck.
Reading the crossing before you drive it
I walk every crossing I'm not certain about, which in the Kimberley is most of them. Wading boots on, walking stick or a solid length of branch to feel the bottom ahead of each step, and I go slowly enough to notice the difference between firm sand and the soft holes that swallow a wheel. I'm reading three things: depth at the deepest point, the entry and exit angles, and what's actually under the water — rock ledge, sand, or the kind of silty bottom that turns to porridge after two or three vehicles have been through it.
Entry and exit angle matters more than raw depth in my experience. A crossing that's 500mm deep with a gentle sloped entry is easier than one that's 350mm with a steep drop-in, because the steep drop puts your bonnet underwater at the worst possible moment and buries your bow wave right where the intake sits. I'd rather a longer, shallower line than a short, steep one, even if the shallower line means more distance with water around the wheels.
Current is the other variable people underestimate. Moving water at knee height can shift a person's footing; at thigh height on a person it's doing real work against the side of a vehicle too. If I can't stand comfortably mid-stream while I'm walking it, I don't drive it without a serious rethink of the line, or I don't drive it at all that day.
What your rig actually needs before you get to the water
A snorkel gets more credit than it deserves and diff breathers get less. The snorkel keeps water out of the intake, which matters, but plenty of rigs have drowned engines through the airbox seal or the alternator rather than a stock air intake sitting too low. Extended diff and gearbox breathers matter just as much, because without them the vacuum created as hot diff oil cools after a crossing can suck water straight past the seals. If you're touring the Gibb River Road or anything in that country for a season, get the breathers extended to the engine bay before you get the snorkel fitted — it's cheaper and does more.
Tyre pressure matters here too, more than people think about for a water crossing specifically — a softer tyre spreads load better on a silty bottom and reduces the chance of digging a hole under the front wheels mid-crossing. If you're towing an off-road camper or caravan through anything deeper than a wet crossing on a formed causeway, the maths changes again. A tow ball weight pushing down through a soft entry, electric brakes that may not appreciate a dunking, and a second set of wheels that need their own line all add risk. I'd genuinely think twice about towing through anything I wasn't fully confident on solo first. The walk, the line, and the wave
Once I've walked it and I'm happy, I drive it in low range, second gear, at a speed that keeps a small bow wave in front of the vehicle without drowning the engine bay in spray. Too slow and you lose momentum in the soft patches; too fast and you push water up over the bonnet and into places it shouldn't be. It's a narrower window than people expect, and it takes a bit of nerve to hold a steady throttle rather than backing off the moment the water gets deep.
I don't stop mid-crossing if I can help it. Stopping kills your bow wave, lets water level rise around the vehicle, and gives silty bottoms a chance to let a tyre sink. If something's wrong enough that you need to stop, you probably shouldn't have started.
Crocodile country changes the rules entirely
Everything above assumes a crossing where the only risk is mechanical. North of about the Tropic of Capricorn, in tidal or connected river systems, that's rarely the whole story. Saltwater crocodiles move well upstream of where people expect them, including into freshwater reaches a long way from the coast, and walking a crossing on foot in that country is a genuinely different risk calculation to doing it in southern rivers.
I don't walk crossings in known croc country. I read them from the bank, from the vehicle, and from local knowledge — station owners, ranger stations, other travellers who've just come through — rather than wading in to check the bottom myself. The Queensland and Northern Territory park authorities publish clear crocodile safety guidance for exactly this reason, and it's worth reading properly rather than assuming a clear-looking waterhole is a safe one. This applies as much on the Old Telegraph Track's northern creek crossings as it does on the King Edward River up near Kalumburu.
Checking conditions before you're standing on the bank
The best crossing decision is often the one you make from town, not from the bank. Main Roads WA publishes road condition reports for the Kimberley's major routes including the Gibb River Road, and the Bureau of Meteorology's rainfall and river height data will tell you if there's been rain upstream that hasn't reached you yet. I check both before I leave a roadhouse with a crossing ahead, and I check again if I've had even a few millimetres of rain overnight, because a crossing that was fine yesterday afternoon can be a different proposition entirely by mid-morning after an isolated storm cell further up the catchment.
None of this is foolproof and I've been wrong before, standing on a bank second-guessing a crossing that turned out fine, and confident about one that turned out softer than expected. The one thing I won't compromise on is doing the assessment at all. If you're planning a full run of the Gibb River Road or pushing further into the Kimberley's back roads, budget the extra twenty minutes per crossing into your day. It's cheaper than a tow truck and a lot cheaper than a new engine.
When to just turn around
I'll admit this took me longer to learn than it should have. Early on I treated turning around as a failure, something to avoid unless the crossing was obviously impassable. Now I treat it as just another outcome of the assessment, the same as deciding the line is good. If the current's too strong to stand comfortably mid-stream, if the bottom's turned to porridge from vehicles ahead of me, or if I can't see a clean exit angle on the far bank, I turn around and find another way, or I wait. Waiting an hour for a tide to drop or a flash flood to pass is boring. It's also free, unlike the alternative.

- There's no single safe number because it depends on your vehicle's air intake height, current speed, and the bottom condition. As a rough guide many stock wagons start taking water into the airbox somewhere around 500-700mm, but a steep entry or strong current can cause problems well before that. Check your vehicle handbook for wading depth and always walk unfamiliar crossings where it's safe to do so.
- Should I walk every water crossing before driving it?
- If it's safe to do so, yes. But in crocodile country in northern Australia, including much of the Kimberley and Cape York, walking a crossing carries a real risk that outweighs the benefit.
