The Northern Territory is Red Centre country — Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon, the West MacDonnell Ranges — plus the Top End's Kakadu and Litchfield further north. For caravanners it's a state of two very different touring experiences: the Red Centre's sealed highways and well-serviced roadhouses make for relatively easy big-rig touring, while the Top End's wet season (November–April) can close roads, flood causeways and shut whole national parks with a day's notice.
Distances are the real planning variable. Alice Springs to Darwin is over 1,500km up the Stuart Highway with genuine roadhouse gaps of 200km+ — not remote by WA standards, but still enough that you plan fuel and water rather than assume. Most of the Red Centre's marquee stops (Kings Canyon, Uluru, Alice Springs) sit on sealed roads and take any standard caravan; it's only the side tracks (Mereenie Loop, parts of the West MacDonnells) that call for high clearance.
Peak touring season is May to September, when Top End humidity drops and Red Centre nights are cold but days are clear — book Kings Canyon Resort and anything near Uluru well ahead for July school holidays. Outside the Dry, treat the Top End as a fly-in destination rather than a towing one.

- When should I tour the NT with a caravan?
- May to September (the Dry) for the whole state. The Top End (Kakadu, Litchfield, Katherine) is genuinely wet-season-affected — many roads and campgrounds close November to April. The Red Centre is more forgiving year-round but still most comfortable outside the December–February heat.
- Can I tow a standard caravan to Uluru and Kings Canyon?
- Yes — the Lasseter and Luritja Highways to both are fully sealed and take any standard caravan. It's only detours like the Mereenie Loop (Kings Canyon to Alice via the West MacDonnells) that need a high-clearance off-road setup.
- How far apart are fuel stops on the Stuart Highway?
- Roadhouses sit roughly 150–250km apart between Alice Springs and Darwin. It's not a remote-fuel-gap state like the WA Kimberley, but you should still fill up at every roadhouse rather than skip one on the assumption the next is close.
