South Australia punches well above its population for caravan touring: the Flinders Ranges' Wilpena Pound, the Eyre Peninsula's empty beaches and seafood towns, and a genuine outback desert-crossing scene (Birdsville Track, Oodnadatta Track, Googs Track, Anne Beadell Highway, Simpson Desert French Line) that's as serious as anything in the country. It's also one of the more caravan-friendly states close to Adelaide, with sealed roads reaching the Flinders and most of the Eyre Peninsula.
The split that matters here is sealed vs desert-track SA. Wilpena Pound, the Barossa and the Eyre Peninsula coast are standard-caravan touring — servo gaps of well under 200km, powered sites in every town. Once you're past Port Augusta heading for Coober Pedy, Marree, Birdsville or the Simpson, you're in genuine remote-travel territory: permits, satellite communication, high-clearance 4WD, and fuel gaps that regularly exceed 200–300km on tracks that can corrugate badly or wash out entirely after rain.
Desert-track season is autumn through spring (April–October) — summer heat on the Birdsville, Oodnadatta or Simpson tracks isn't just uncomfortable, it's genuinely dangerous if you break down. Book ahead for Wilpena Pound and Coober Pedy in the July school-holiday peak; the desert tracks themselves rarely need bookings but do need a Desert Parks Pass and a trip-intentions form lodged with SA Police.
