Outback South Australia

Coober Pedy, the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks, and some of the most serious desert crossings in the country.

Outback SA is where the state's touring gets serious. Coober Pedy — the underground opal-mining town — is the natural hub, sitting on the sealed Stuart Highway but surrounded by some of Australia's most storied desert tracks: the Oodnadatta Track (following the old Ghan railway line), the Birdsville Track (running north to the Queensland border), the Googs Track and Anne Beadell Highway (both remote dune crossings west toward WA), and the Simpson Desert's French Line further east.

Every one of these tracks demands a properly equipped 4WD with an off-road-rated van or camper, a Desert Parks Pass, and a trip-intentions form lodged with SA Police before departure. Fuel gaps regularly exceed 200–300km, mobile coverage is patchy to absent, and a satellite communicator is not optional — these are genuinely remote crossings where a breakdown means a long wait, not a quick tow.

April to October is the only sensible touring window — summer heat on these tracks isn't just uncomfortable, it's dangerous, and several of the routes are effectively closed by heat-related risk (and sometimes formal advisories) over December–March. Coober Pedy itself has a full caravan-park and supply-town infrastructure; once you head out onto the tracks, you're self-sufficient until the next roadhouse or town.

Common questions about Outback South Australia

What permit do I need for SA's outback tracks?
A Desert Parks Pass covers the Simpson Desert, Birdsville Track and most outback SA reserves. Lodge a trip-intentions form with SA Police before departing, regardless of your experience level.
Can a caravan do the Oodnadatta or Birdsville Track?
An off-road-rated van behind a capable 4WD can, in good conditions — but these tracks close completely after rain and always need a current-conditions check before you commit.
When should I avoid outback SA's desert tracks?
December to March. Summer heat makes a breakdown genuinely dangerous, and fuel/water margins that are comfortable in winter become tight and risky in extreme heat.
