Flinders Ranges
Wilpena Pound and ancient ranges — SA's most caravan-friendly outback experience.
1 caravan park
Wilpena Pound is the Flinders Ranges' centrepiece — a natural amphitheatre of peaks you can walk into via a well-formed track, with a caravan park and resort sitting right at the range's edge. The approach from Port Augusta is sealed the whole way, making this the most accessible genuine-outback range experience in SA — no 4WD required for the core sights.
Beyond Wilpena, the northern Flinders (Arkaroola, Blinman) get progressively rougher and more remote, with some tracks needing high clearance, but the main tourist loop through Wilpena, Blinman and Parachilna is manageable for most well-prepared caravans on graded roads.
Autumn and spring are the pick of the seasons — summer heat in the ranges is serious, and winter nights get properly cold. Book Wilpena Pound well ahead for July school holidays and Easter, when it's the busiest outback stop in the state.

All guides →Common questions about Flinders Ranges
- Do I need a 4WD for Wilpena Pound?
- No — the approach from Port Augusta and Hawker is fully sealed, and the walk into the Pound itself is on foot. It's only the further-north Flinders tracks (Arkaroola and beyond) that call for higher clearance.
- What's the best season to visit the Flinders Ranges?
- Autumn (April–May) and spring (September–October) — summer is very hot for walking and winter nights are cold, though both are still visitable if you plan around it.
