The Red Centre

The Red Centre

Uluru, Kings Canyon and Alice Springs — sealed-road touring through Australia's iconic outback heart.

2 caravan parks · 1 touring route

The Red Centre is built around a loop most caravanners run in some order: Alice Springs, Kings Canyon (Watarrka), and Uluru-Kata Tjuta. All three sit on sealed roads and take any standard caravan — the Lasseter and Luritja Highways are well maintained and roadhouse-serviced, which makes this the easiest genuine outback loop in the country for a first remote trip.

Kings Canyon Resort is the obvious base for the canyon rim walk (start early — it's exposed and gets hot fast), and Alice Springs is worth two or three nights in its own right for the West MacDonnell Ranges day trips (Ormiston Gorge, Standley Chasm), most of which are also sealed or well-graded. The Mereenie Loop connecting Kings Canyon to Alice via the West MacDonnells is unsealed and needs a permit plus a higher-clearance vehicle — most standard-caravan travellers instead backtrack via the sealed highway.

May to September is peak season with cold, clear nights and comfortable walking-temperature days; book Kings Canyon Resort and Uluru-area parks well ahead for the July school-holiday window.

Common questions about The Red Centre

Can a standard caravan do the Red Centre loop?
Yes — Alice Springs, Kings Canyon and Uluru are all connected by sealed highway and any standard caravan can do the full loop comfortably.
Do I need a permit for anything in the Red Centre?
Only if you detour onto the unsealed Mereenie Loop (Aboriginal land permit required, available from Alice Springs visitor information). The main sealed-highway loop needs no special permit.
