Weight distribution hitches: when you need one and when you don't

I had a bloke roll into the servo at Mareeba a few years back with a WDH bolted to his van that he'd never once adjusted since the dealer fitted it. Bars rusted solid, chains hanging like they'd given up. He didn't know what it was doing, only that the salesman said he "needed one." That's the problem with weight distribution hitches. Half the vans towing around Australia have one fitted and half the owners couldn't tell you why.

Let's sort out what these things actually do, because it's not what most people think.

What a weight distribution hitch is actually for

A WDH doesn't reduce your tow ball weight. That's the first thing to get straight, because I hear it misquoted constantly. Your tow ball weight is your tow ball weight, set by how the van's loaded and where its axles sit relative to the coupling. A WDH doesn't change that number on the scales. What it does is take some of that downward load off the rear axle of the tow vehicle and spread it back across the van's axles and forward onto the tow vehicle's front axle, using spring bars under tension.

Why does that matter? Because a heavy tow ball weight pushes the back of your ute or wagon down and lifts the front end up. Less weight on the steering axle means less grip for steering and braking. Headlights point at the treetops. Handling gets vague, especially in crosswinds or when a truck blows past. A WDH corrects that geometry so the tow vehicle sits closer to how it would unladen, all four tyres carrying a sensible share of the load.

It doesn't make a dangerously overloaded combination safe. It doesn't fix a van that's fundamentally too heavy for the tow vehicle. It's a levelling and handling tool, not a magic weight eraser. I've had that argument with more than one caravan salesman.

When you actually need one

The honest answer is: it depends on your tow ball weight as a percentage of your tow vehicle's rear axle capacity, and how much that weight is sagging your rear end. As a rough guide, once tow ball weight gets up around 200-250kg or more on a mid-size dual cab or wagon, you'll usually see enough rear sag and front-end lift to justify a WDH. Under that, on a lot of modern utes with decent rear leaf packs, you often don't need one at all.

I've set up plenty of rigs towing 20ft-plus off-road vans with tow ball weights north of 250kg where a WDH made a genuine difference to how the vehicle sat and handled. I've also seen guys bolt a WDH onto a 15ft hybrid with a 120kg ball weight because their mate had one, and all it did was add complexity to a system that didn't need it. If your tow vehicle isn't squatting, your headlights aren't pointing at the sky, and your GVM and rear axle rating have room to spare, you're probably chasing a solution to nothing.

What it won't fix

A WDH will not turn an overloaded van into a legal, safe one. If your GCM is exceeded, or your van's ATM is over what the tow vehicle is rated to tow, spring bars under the coupling don't change the physics. I've seen this exact mistake more times than I can count: a couple buys a van that's genuinely too much for their vehicle, gets told by the dealer that a WDH will "sort the sway out," and drives away thinking they've fixed a fundamental mismatch. They haven't. They've just made the symptoms less obvious until something breaks or they get pulled over.

It also won't fix sway caused by a poorly loaded van. If your heavy items are behind the axles instead of over them or slightly forward, no amount of spring bar tension solves that. Load your water tanks, batteries, and gear so the weight sits low and central, then worry about the hitch.

Anti-sway add-ons: worth it or not

A lot of WDH systems come with a friction sway control arm, or you can retrofit one. These add resistance to lateral movement of the van relative to the tow vehicle, which can help in a genuine crosswind situation or when a big rig overtakes and drags air with it. I don't think they're essential for every setup, but if you're regularly towing on the Bruce Highway or across the Nullarbor where truck traffic and crosswinds are constant, it's cheap insurance.

What I'd push back on is electronic sway control being sold as a replacement for correct loading and a properly matched combination. It's a backup system, not a fix. I've recovered vans that fishtailed themselves into a ditch with the electronic sway control fitted and switched on. It slowed the inevitable, it didn't stop it.

Setting one up properly

Getting a WDH adjusted correctly takes more than bolting the bars on and driving off. You want the tow vehicle sitting at, or very close to, its unladen height front and rear once the van is hitched and the bars are engaged. Too little tension and you haven't achieved anything. Too much and you're overloading the coupling and putting unnecessary stress on the chassis rail where the hitch head mounts. Get it weighed on a weighbridge with the van hitched and loaded as it would be for a trip, both with and without the WDH engaged, so you know exactly what it's doing to your axle loads. A lot of caravan servicing centres near capital cities offer this as part of a hitch fitting. Don't just eyeball ride height in the driveway and call it done.

I'll add one thing that's a bit contrarian: I reckon a decent number of WDH systems on the road are set up worse than no WDH at all, because they've never been checked on a scale. An unadjusted or over-tensioned WDH can do more harm than a well-loaded van running bare tow ball weight within spec. If you're not going to get it weighed and adjusted properly, you might genuinely be better off skipping it and just loading the van correctly.

Reversing and manoeuvring with a WDH fitted

One thing people don't think about until they're doing it: a WDH engaged makes the coupling behave differently when reversing, particularly on uneven ground or into a site with a dip. The spring bars can bind or clunk if the van and tow vehicle aren't roughly level relative to each other. Some drivers disengage the bars for tight reversing manoeuvres and re-engage once they're hitched up straight and level, though that's more common with heavier setups. The bottom line on fitting one

Work out your actual tow ball weight, check it against your tow vehicle's rear axle rating and GVM headroom, and only then decide if a WDH earns its place on your drawbar. If you do fit one, get it weighed and adjusted properly, not eyeballed in a driveway. And if you're anywhere near your combination's overall weight limits, a WDH is the least of your problems. Sort the fundamental weights out first using the numbers on your compliance plates, not what a salesman reckons you need.

That bloke at Mareeba, by the way, was running an 18ft van with a tow ball weight under 180kg on a vehicle with plenty of rear axle capacity spare. He didn't need the hitch at all. He just needed someone to tell him that.
