The Savannah Way: Cairns to the Kimberley

The great tropical crossing from the Coral Sea to Broome, through the Gulf Savannah and Katherine. There is a fully sealed way through and an adventurous mostly-unsealed way — we lay out both.

FAQ

Do I need a 4WD for the Savannah Way?
Not for the sealed route (Cairns–Normanton–Highway–Kununurra). The classic Gulf Track sections and the Gibb are another story — those want a 4WD and an off-road van or camper.
Can I do the Savannah Way in the wet?
No. The unsealed sections flood and close from about November to April. This is a dry-season trip, full stop.
